The VOLCANO is a temporary pavilion, bringing together people under the attention of urban development.
The pavilion follows in concept and shape the characteristics of a volcano. The pavilion erupts at different locations in the city and uncovers hidden topics and events. VOLCANO is the symbol standing for renewal and change, the themes however change constantly.
The form evolves out of the ground and encourages people to climb the top. Even if the construction looks complex at the first sight, the pavilion consist of basic connections and standardized wooden slats. The assembly basically contains a simple layering procedure, which is achievable by any amateur and without heavy machinery. With this in mind we want people to participate in the volcanic eruption, creating a new awareness of the spot.
This layering technique allows us to create an organic shape by using only straight wooden slaths. In 4 m height the slaths band together to create a platform with helical stairs. Along the ascendency the point of view changes and once the platform is reached, the visitor can look down on the 8 by 8 Meter sizedbase.
The base is the key to the communication between visitor and pavilion. On these 1 m x 1 m lasered segments light is bursting through like lava arising to the surface. The exposed information on the segments start to emerge to the big picture when viewed from the top. Change your point of view.
